Behind the machines: The training that keeps production moving

At Gordian Strapping, technical support and training play a vital role in helping customers keep their machines running smoothly. With nearly three decades of experience behind the team, Mick Wearing our Technical Support Manager specialises in hands-on guidance for both OMS and StraPack machines. He provides training that covers everything from machine setup and maintenance to troubleshooting and fault finding—ensuring customer engineers have the knowledge and confidence to keep production moving. Each session is tailored to the specific needs of each customer and their industry.

Mick began his journey with Gordian back in June 1998, starting as a Service Engineer. Over the years, his dedication and technical skill led him to the role of Senior Engineer, before taking up his current position. Today, he plays a vital role not only in supporting customers, but in training both external engineers and the Gordian team itself.

Hands-on, industry-tailored training

At the heart of Mick’s work is the technical training he delivers to customers’ engineers. His aim is simple but vital: to ensure that engineers are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to identify faults, carry out repairs, and keep production running smoothly.

Each training course is practical and hands-on, using OMS and StraPack machines, and tailored to the specific industry and equipment of each customer. Every trainee receives a manual, but most importantly, they leave with real-world experience.

Core training areas include:

  • ·       Machine Overview – Understanding layout and key components
  • ·       Cycle Sequence – A breakdown of machine operation.
  • ·       Strapping Head Rebuild – Hands-on disassembly and reassembly.
  • ·       Adjustments & Setup – Getting machines ready for action.
  • ·       Fault Finding – Diagnosing alarms and issues.
  • ·       Maintenance Procedures – Covering interim and contract maintenance tasks.

Each course typically lasts 4–5 hours and is delivered either on-site or at our head office, depending on the customer’s preference.

Built around real challenges

Unlike generic training programs, Mick’s sessions are built around real-world challenges. He incorporates:

  • ·       Common faults seen in the field
  • ·       Preventative maintenance best practices
  • ·       Machine-specific nuances and updates

This practical insight allows engineers to approach machines with greater confidence, reducing guesswork and improving both safety and uptime.

Supporting success beyond training

Training doesn’t end when the session does. Mick offers ongoing support to those he’s trained – often over the phone or via video messaging – helping engineers tackle problems as they arise.

He also ensures training content is kept up to date with the latest software and machine developments, sourcing technical information directly from manufacturers.

And it’s not just customers who benefit. Mick trains new and existing internal engineers, sharing everything from technical updates to field insights.

Proven Impact: Confidence, Safety, and Uptime

Training delivers measurable results:

  • ·       Increased machine uptime thanks to faster fault resolution.
  • ·       Reduced breakdown risks through better preventative maintenance.
  • .·      Enhanced safety from a deeper understanding of machine operation.
  • ·       Outstanding feedback from engineers across the country.

Recent testimonials say it all:

“The training was excellent. The team were really engaged and said it was one of the best sessions they’ve attended. We’d love to schedule another when our test rig arrives.”

– Engineering Manager, UK

“Mick was very informed, took a structured approach and answered all of our questions clearly. It was refreshing to be trained by someone who clearly knows what he’s talking about.”

– Pat, Maintenance Engineer

The driving force behind reliable support

With decades of in-house experience, Gordian Strapping’s technical support team plays a vital role behind the scenes—sharing knowledge, reducing downtime, and ensuring both customers and engineers have the skills and confidence to keep machines running smoothly.
